About Us: Our History and Non-Profit Owners
At Green Century Capital Management, we are committed to protecting the environment. Green Century was founded by non-profit environmental advocacy organizations in 1991 and remains wholly owned by those organizations.
100% of any profits Green Century earns on the fees we receive for managing the Green Century Funds belong to our non-profit owners. These earnings will be used to support public interest campaigns, such as promoting energy conservation and the use of alternative energy, fighting for improved public transportation and public health protections, campaigning to reduce the use of toxic chemicals and to improve product and food safety, and advocating for ethics reform and corporate accountability.
The Green Century Funds are owned by their shareholders, just as other mutual funds are owned by their shareholders. Any financial returns generated by the Green Century Balanced Fund and the Green Century Equity Fund belong to each mutual fund’s shareholders – again, just as other mutual funds’ earnings belong to the shareholders of those mutual funds.
Green Century Founders
Several of Green Century Capital Management's owners are part of a group of non-profit organizations generally referred to as the "State PIRGs." Founded by students around the country in the early 1970's, the State PIRGs have grown into some of the leading public interest organizations in the country. The State PIRGs are a national network of state-based non-partisan, non-profit organizations that advocate for the public interest. When the environment is being polluted, consumers are being mistreated, and our democracy is being threatened, the State PIRGs speak out and work to make change happen. Using time-tested strategies of research, lobbying, organizing and outreach, the PIRGs have won significant victories for more than three decades.
