Twenty five years ago, a group of non-profit environmental leaders decided to help people save for their future without compromising their values. It was a simple concept, but one that was only being used by a handful of fellow pioneers in the socially and environmentally responsible investing space.
Since then, both Green Century and the field of environmentally responsible investing have grown. There are more investors choosing this path and more innovative ways to use the power of investing to create change than ever before.
In our 25th anniversary year, we are proud and excited to offer a new way to help people save for their future. Green Century is launching a new fund – the Green Century MSCI International Index Fund. This fund is the first responsible and diversified international fossil fuel free index fund available in the U.S.
The International Index Fund seeks to invest in companies chosen for their outstanding environmental, social and governance (ESG) ratings in 22 developed countries. The Fund invests in stocks included in the MSCI World ex USA SRI ex Fossil Fuels Index, a custom index calculated by MSCI, Inc. the global index provider that also maintains the custom index for the Green Century Equity Fund.
Like Green Century’s other Funds, the International Index Fund is fossil fuel free, avoids other environmentally dangerous industries like genetically modified organisms (GMOs), weapons and tobacco, and is broadly diversified across multiple industry sectors, from technology to clean energy.
In the decades since our founding, Green Century has become a leader in socially and environmentally responsible investing by following a three-pronged approach that no other mutual fund family offers: investing in sustainable companies; leading shareholder advocacy for cutting edge environmental policies; and 100% of the net profits earned managing the Green Century Funds belonging to nonprofit environmental and public health organizations.
Our triple green approach continues to help investors save for their future and maximize their impact. We are excited to welcome the newest member of our fund family, and hope to continue ethical and responsible investing on behalf of our shareholders for another twenty five years.

The World ex USA SRI ex Fossil Fuels Index is a custom index calculated by MSCI Inc. The World ex USA SRI ex Fossil Fuels Index is comprised of the common stocks of the companies in the MSCI World ex USA SRI Index (the World ex USA SRI Index), minus the stocks of the companies that explore for, extract, produce, manufacture or refine coal, oil or gas or produce or transmit electricity derived from fossil fuels or transmit natural gas or have carbon reserves included in the World ex USA SRI (Socially Responsible Investment) Index. The World ex USA SRI Index includes large and mid-cap stocks from approximately 22 developed markets countries (excluding the U.S.). The World ex USA SRI Index is a capitalization weighted index that provides exposure to companies with what MSCI calculates to have outstanding Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) ratings and excludes companies whose products have negative social or environmental impacts.
