Director of Shareholder Advocacy Heads to São Paulo, Brazil

In São Paulo this week, Green Century’s Director of Shareholder Advocacy, Annie Sanders, will explore innovative ways to protect the Amazon rainforest, accelerate the transition to a green economy and invest in nature.

She will be attending the annual “PRI in Person” conference organized by the United Nations’ Principles for Responsible Investment, taking place in Brazil from Nov. 4 – 6, just one week before COP30 convenes in Belém, Brazil, to tackle climate change.

The conference is an opportunity to forge connections, strengthen collaborations and gain strategic tools to build on Green Century’s 15-year track record of winning protections for tropical forests and other wild places. The conference helps build momentum and foster ideas to persuade investors and companies to take concrete steps to protect nature and our climate.

“I’m looking forward to PRI in Person as an opportunity to connect with other sustainable investors, learn about cutting-edge work in the responsible investment space, and strategize together about how we can leverage capital to make an impact for the planet,” Annie said.

In the last five years, Green Century’s team of shareholder advocates played a key role in convincing Bunge and Archer-Daniels-Midland – two of the world’s largest agricultural companies, both with significant operations in Brazil – to make time-bound no-deforestation and no-conversion commitments in their Latin American soy supply chains. Winning these agreements put both companies on record with goals and action plans to protect tropical rainforests and savannahs, including the Amazon rainforest and the Cerrado.

The trip also builds on the accomplishments and momentum from New York Climate Week where government leaders, nonprofits and NGOs strategized about ways to advance progress on climate change, including protecting tropical forests.

Along with attending workshops and networking with like-minded people, Annie will speak on a panel on November 5 about a new nature finance vehicle, the Tropical Forests Forever Facility, that Brazil aims to launch at COP30. This innovative fund essentially gives tropical forest countries a financial incentive to keep their trees standing.

Stay tuned for Annie’s first-person account of her time in São Paulo, photos and anecdotes from PRI in Person, Brazil.
