The Wild Things Conference, a gathering of nature conservationists from all over Illinois and Missouri, was a bright oasis on an otherwise gray day in O’Fallon, IL. The conference center was filled with informative presentations, engaging workshops, and a variety of exhibitors. The tables lining the hallways displayed the work of environmental advocacy organizations, land trusts, wildlife conservation groups, nature-inspired artists, and, as an attendee exclaimed when she saw our display, “an investment advisor?!”

Seeing a financial company at a conference about environmental conservation came as a surprise to this individual. Once I explained the concept of fossil fuel free investing and shareholder advocacy, though, she understood the connection between individuals’ investments and conserving our natural spaces and wildlife. She left the table excited to talk to her financial advisor about exploring sustainable investment options.
Many Americans care about the planet and want to take action to protect our country’s landscapes and wildlife. Typical actions people take for the environment include donating their time, money or resources. An extra way to help the planet is by investing in a way that mirrors the one’s environmental values. I think this is why some of the visitors to my table were surprised and intrigued when I told them about Green Century Funds.
Attending the Wild Things Conference renewed my passion for marketing Green Century and underscored the importance of education in our marketing strategy. I am excited to continue sharing Green Century’s Sustainable Investing Guide and other resources to new audiences and expanding people’s awareness of environmentally responsible investing strategies.
