Tractor Supply Company gains ground on trimming carbon emissions

Boston, January 29, 2026 – Tractor Supply Company, the largest rural lifestyle retailer in the U.S, has agreed to investigate new opportunities for energy-efficiency projects across its 2,300 stores. The company will publish progress on specific projects and energy savings as part of its 2026 stewardship reporting. Tractor Supply took these steps after Green Century Capital Management filed a shareholder resolution and met with CEO Hal Lawton and other company executives.

“Energy efficiency is the unsung hero of the move to reduce carbon emissions,” said Leslie Samuelrich, president of Green Century. “We look forward to seeing how Tractor Supply’s progress on energy efficiency can help cut the climate risk facing both its business and customers.”

Operational opportunities

The easiest emissions to reduce are the ones a company has direct control over. For retailers such as Tractor Supply, this often means the emissions of the bulbs that light its stores and the machinery that powers its distribution centers.

Because companies can more easily electrify their own operations, many—including Tractor Supply competitors Home Depot and Lowe’s— work to increase renewable energy and decrease operating emissions as keystones of their climate strategies. These competitors are among the stores across America whose roofs have the space to generate enough clean energy to power almost 8 million U.S. homes, according to Green Century’s key nonprofit partners at Environment America.

Although Tractor Supply touted plans to increase its renewable energy use in 2025, it has yet to set a long-term goal to continue bringing the benefits of clean energy to its stores and distribution centers. Meanwhile, the company aims to add 900 or so stores and reach 3,200 by 2030, increasing both its square footage and the emissions it spews into our air.

“A company’s climate ambition should match its climate footprint,” said Green Century Shareholder Advocate Giovanna Eichner. “By better demonstrating progress and evaluating plans for future in-store emissions reductions, Tractor Supply is taking an important step toward shrinking its climate impact as its business grows.”
