The Balanced Fund was an early investor in green bonds and supports climate mitigation, water protection, and renewable energy projects around the world. Objective

The Balanced Fund’s objective is to provide capital growth and income from a diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds selected based on environmental criteria.

Sustainable Investment Strategy

Values-aligned exclusions:

Values-aligned exclusions avoid companies that: 

  • Explore for, extract, produce, manufacture or refine coal, oil or gas; produce or transmit electricity derived from fossil fuels; or own fossil fuel reserves;  
  • Firearms or military weapons  
  • Nuclear energy, and weapons 
  • Tobacco 
  • Factory farming 
  • Genetically modified organisms (GMOs)  
  • Metals and mining companies  
  • Biocides or specialty chemicals 
  • Companies misaligned with the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Clean Energy, Life Below Water, Life on Land and Climate Action.

Financial Quality Assessment:

The portfolio incorporates material financial data through a quality assessment that evaluates empirical research and fundamental data characterized by profitability, management effectiveness, and cash flows, that seeks to enhance long-term performance. 

Fixed Income and Green Bonds:

Bonds are included in the Green Century Balanced Fund’s portfolio to balance or offset risks associated with the Fund’s investment in stocks.  The Fund actively seeks to invest a portion of the fixed income holdings in green and sustainable bonds.

Investment Sub-advisor and Portfolio Manager:
Northern Trust

The Balanced Fund’s sub-advisor is Northern Trusta world class asset manager with investment expertise across equity, fixed income, asset allocation, tax management, and sustainability A team of five experienced portfolio managers at Northern Trust is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Balanced Fund. 

Mousumi Chinara, Vice President

Mousumi Chinara, CFA, is a Vice President, Senior Portfolio Manager of the Fixed Income team at Northern Trust Asset Management in Chicago. Mousumi’s main responsibility is to manage index based intermediate to long duration portfolios. She is responsible for managing various separately managed accounts with a focus on balance sheet and insurance clients. Prior to joining Northern Trust Asset Management in February 2019, Mousumi worked at Reinsurance Group of America (RGA) and VOYA Investment Management as a Portfolio Manager responsible for various US, Canada and Asia Pac based clients. 

Mousumi received a M.B.A. degree in Finance from Goizueta Business School (Emory University). Mousumi is a CFA charterholder and a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Chicago. 

Chaitanya Mandavakuriti, Fixed Income Portfolio Manager

Chaitanya Mandavakuriti, CFA, is a fixed income portfolio manager and the co-head of Investment Grade Credit. He is responsible for the management of active fixed income portfolios for domestic as well as international mandates. Chaitanya manages the Core/Core Plus strategies as well as Quant Active Fixed Income strategies. He joined Northern Trust in 2013 as a fixed income research analyst and transferred to the Portfolio Management team in July 2016. Prior to joining Northern Trust, Chaitanya worked on bespoke fixed income research covering European banks for buy-side clients from 2010. He received his MBA from the Indian Institute of Management specializing in Finance and Strategy prior to which he earned a Bachelor of Technology in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology. Chaitanya is a CFA charterholder 

Christine Tinker, Senior Portfolio Manager

Christine Tinker, CFA, is a Senior Portfolio Manager on the Global Equity team within Northern Trust Asset Management. She is responsible for managing Quantitative and Tax Advantaged Equity Strategies for high net worth and institutional investors. Prior to joining Northern’s Global Equity team in 2015, Christine was a Portfolio Manager at U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management where she managed investment portfolios for ultra high net worth individuals. Christine received a B.S. degree in Finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is a CFA® Charterholder, earned the CFA Certificate in ESG Investing, and is an active member of CFA Society Chicago and the CFA Institute.  

Quinn Whitaker, Portfolio Manager, Global Equity Team

Quinn Whitaker, CFA, is a Portfolio Manager on the Global Equity team within Northern Trust Asset Management. He specializes in the implementation of Tax Advantaged Equity and Quantitative Factor strategies. Prior to joining the Global Equity team in 2017, Quinn was a Portfolio Manager at U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management where he managed investment portfolios for high-net-worth individuals and institutional clients. Quinn received a B.S. in Finance and Accounting from Indiana University. Quinn is a CFA charter holder and a member of the CFA Society of Chicago and the CFA Institute. 

Peter Wilke, Head of Tactical Asset Allocation

Peter Wilke, CFA, is head of tactical asset allocation (TAA) at Northern Trust Asset Management. Peter is responsible for the research and development of innovative investment strategies for the firm’s TAA initiatives.  Previously, Peter worked at Wellington Management, where he was the team leader of the multi-asset income investment boutique in Boston. His group was responsible for developing and managing multi-asset portfolios. Prior to joining Wellington Management in 2015, Peter was a member of the multi-asset portfolio strategies team at BlackRock in London and New York where he spent 10 years as portfolio manager and head of the global tactical asset allocation research team. Peter started his professional career at Deutsche Bank in 1999 before joining Merrill Lynch in London in 2005. Peter holds a bachelor’s degree, with honors, in international economics from Nottingham University in 2004 and a master’s of science degree in economics and finance from Warwick Business School in 2005.
