Almost every day, there seems to be more disquieting news about data centers, the natural resources they devour, and the questionable need for the madcap growth of AI, or artificial intelligence.
At Green Century, we remain vigilant about corporate behavior and partner with our nonprofit owners and key affiliates to educate the public about data center’s impacts on the environment and human health.
Our shareholder advocacy team has regularly met with companies such as NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Intel to advance actions that will address the environmental consequences of data centers and AI. Advocates are ensuring that the impacts of designing, building, operating, and selling data center technology on our planet are taken into consideration both now and in the future. As a result of these engagements, five semiconductor companies committed to publishing climate transition plans for reducing their climate emissions. In 2025, Intel was among the five companies that have now fulfilled their pledge by publishing a roadmap to reach its targets for expanding renewables and limiting global warming.
This year, Green Century shareholder advocates are also spearheading investor engagement with companies increasing the use of AI in their products and operations. These companies, including Adobe, Netflix, and Shopify, must be held accountable for the emissions their AI use is enabling that increases their carbon contribution. Advocates are pressuring companies using AI to leverage their power as purchasers and request that their big tech suppliers provide responsible, sustainable AI products.
We understand that the rise of AI and the quick embrace of this technology is worrisome. That’s why our shareholder advocacy program has made promoting clean energy and reducing carbon emissions a topic of discussion with major corporations involved in the data center buildout.
