The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is one of the largest intact ecosystems in the world. The Refuge is also central to the subsistence life and culture of the Gwich’in, an Alaska Native tribe whose people have lived in the region for thousands of years. The fossil fuel industry and its allies have been fighting to open the Refuge to oil and gas drilling for over forty years. But drilling in the Arctic Refuge is extremely unpopular with the public, with 70% of U.S. voters against it. In the face of these new attempts to exploit the Refuge for oil and gas, civil society, native people, and investors are coming together to protect it. Ellen Montgomery, Director, Great Outdoors Campaign, Environment America

Ellen runs campaigns to protect America’s beautiful places, from local beachfronts to remote mountain peaks. She coordinates coalition efforts to protect national forests across the country. Ellen previously worked as the organizing director for Environment America’s Climate Defenders campaign and has managed grassroots campaign offices across the country. Ellen lives in Denver, where she likes to hike in Colorado’s mountains.

Andy Moderow, Senior Director of Policy, Alaska Wilderness League

Based in Anchorage, Andy joined the Alaska Wilderness League team in January 2016. A lifelong Alaskan, Andy grew up running sled dogs and finished the 1,100 mile Iditarod in 2001 just before attending Cornell University. After graduating, he returned to Alaska and interned in the National Parks Conservation Association’s Alaska office. Following that, he spent four years as a state legislative aide, taking a yearlong break to manage a statewide political campaign. Just prior to joining the League team, he worked for the Alaska LCV State League in a variety of roles, ranging from Executive Director and Political Director to Data Director. When not working, Andy can be found at the family dog kennel — located just outside Denali National Park — or in the mountains skiing and studying the snowpack.

Kristen Moreland, Executive Director, Gwich’in Steering Committee

Kristen is from, raised, and enrolled to Gwichyaa Zhee Gwichin Tribal Government (Fort Yukon, Alaska), and was also raised in Arctic Village, she is Gwich’in Athabascan. Mrs. Moreland has passionately worked for nonprofit organizations for the interior communities for over 15 years. She has planned, managed, developed programs, policies and procedures, and strives to help organizations operate at their fullest potential. She is recognized for her work to create efficient and effective programs; fostering a supportive team environment; and making sure the program/departments follow grant guidelines. She thrives in high pressure and fast paced situations. Her interests are fishing, hunting, picking berries, traveling, anything that has to do with traditional activities and the land, traditional dancing, singing and watching her daughters play basketball. She is also very competitive.

Andrew Shalit, Shareholder Advocate, Green Century Capital Management.

Andrew leverages Green Century’s position as a shareholder to drive companies to adopt more environmentally sustainable policies and practices. Prior to joining Green Century in 2023, he had been an advocate for the environment and society for nearly three decades. In his career, he was also Cofounder of 18by Vote, a non-partisan group working to increase voter turnout by teenagers, and Technology Director at V-Day, the global movement to end violence against women and girls. Andrew has a B.A. in English from Harvard University.
